before sleep
By Roxanne Carter

i can't quite catch my breath
summer snatches it away
i can't say anything
just mumbling
steady rummm of
the ceiling fan
& sheets in disarray

you push me to the bed
your face is like the sun
hair flecked with rays
bright angelic
like some relic of the past
a cupid's grin

i want to last to win
your heart hold it fast

by some endeavor i'll contrive
to watch you slip & catch your sigh
& keep your visage in my eyes
until i count
from 10 to 5 to sleep
to keep our bodies neatly
curled like quotation marks

in the dark you starkly shine
& i hold you
like yr mine
hold you
'till it's time
to go

it's seductive
to let night slip
lullaby to sing to sleep
& slow too fast

i want to keep still

skim my fingers on your hip
spill my dreams like silk
upon the floor until they don't
disturb me
anymore
